Choosing an aged care home

Beginning your search for a suitable Aged Care home

There is a lot to consider when choosing the right care home for yourself or a loved one, and we understand it can seem overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together some practical advice to help guide you through the process.
Aged care assessement

Aged care assessment

Firstly, before choosing a care home you’ll need to undergo an aged care assessment from the Government and it is advised that you carry out a Centrelink income and asset assessment form. These will confirm your eligibility for entry into residential aged care and help you determine any costs you may need to contribute to your care. Once you have received both your ACAT(or ACAS if you live in Victoria) assessment letter and your income and asset assessment letter, it is easier for you to start arranging tours of aged care homes to find the right one for you or your loved one.

You can start identifying care homes in your local area which provide the type of care you require by visiting the My Aged Care website, speaking to your GP, or find a Bupa Aged Care home near you.

Taking a tour of your chosen homes

Taking a tour of your chosen homes

Once you have identified care homes in your local area and compiled a shortlist we recommend getting in touch with them to book a tour. It is a good idea to visit as many of them as possible, as although homes may offer similar services, they are all unique. By visiting your local Bupa Aged Care home, you can get to know the team, find out about our unique model of care and see the range of activities we provide, which are tailored to the interests and hobbies of our residents.

What to consider when choosing an aged care home

When choosing an aged care home, it’s important to select a home that offers you the right care and support. At Bupa, the health and care of our residents is our reason for being; that’s why we put the person first in everything we do. We believe it’s important to embrace the individuality of every resident. Watch our video to find out how.

We’ve also produced a handy guide and checklist to help you understand what to look for when taking a tour which can help you with comparing the homes you are considering. It covers important aspects such as what you see, hear and feel on entering the home and throughout the tour.
