From her beginnings as a carer to her current role, she has cultivated meaningful relationships and valuable insights that shape the quality of care provided. In this interview, Joy shares her journey, experience, and what drives her passion for delivering exceptional care to residents and their families.
1. Can you tell us about your journey with Bupa Aged Care? I commenced my journey with Bupa Aged Care on November 10, 2015, as a carer at Bupa Bankstown, where I worked for one year and five months. This was an incredibly beautiful phase of my career, as it was my first experience working in aged care. Being the first point of contact for residents and delivering their daily care was incredibly meaningful. It allowed me to become a part of their daily lives, and I found it deeply fulfilling to contribute to their quality of life.
2. What was you next step after being a carer? An exciting opportunity then came my way to join the team as a Customer Service Consultant. I embraced this role for a year, which gave me a broader understanding of business operations. It was a smooth transition since I already had strong connections with the residents and their families. Meeting and supporting families in this capacity allowed me to enhance my customer service skills while deepening my understanding of the care home’s overall function.
3. How did your career progress from there? Further career progression led me to the Business Administrator role, which I held for nearly four years. During this time, I had the opportunity to step up as an Acting General Manager on several occasions. These experiences helped me refine my leadership and operational skills, particularly in human resources and resident care.
Following this, I was successfully appointed as the Assistant General Manager at Bupa Bankstown, where I served for three years. I also had the opportunity to assist Bupa Queens Park for two months, which led to my appointment as the General Manager of Bupa Queens Park in March 2025.
4. How do you feel about your journey so far? Looking back, my journey with Bupa has been colourful and rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of experiencing multiple roles, each offering valuable insights into the operations of a care home. I am incredibly grateful for the career opportunities Bupa has provided. Most importantly, I cherish the deeper understanding I have gained in delivering the best quality care to our residents, who have entrusted us with their well-being.
5. What is your educational background? I hold a Bachelor's degree in Commerce, majoring in Finance, and a Masters in Public Administration. I also earned a Certificate in Aged Care and am currently studying for a Bachelor in Theology. However, I took a break from my studies last year to welcome my baby boy, Zayne, who is now two years old.
6. What do you enjoy most about your role? The most rewarding part of my role is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our residents, their families, and my team. Seeing residents feel comfortable, happy, and well cared for every day is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that I play a part in creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment makes all the hard work worthwhile.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the opportunity to lead a reflective group at Bupa Bankstown. It is a privilege to help meet the emotional and spiritual needs of our residents. Sitting down with them, engaging in thoughtful discussions, and sharing in moments of reflection allows me to offer support that complements the physical care we provide. This part of my role enables me to build deeper, more meaningful connections with residents, and it brings me immense joy to contribute to their overall well-being.
7. What makes this role special to you? The relationships I have built—with residents, families, and colleagues—are what make this role so special. It is a privilege to be trusted with the care of others, and I take immense pride in ensuring we provide the highest quality of service every day.
