Choosing a care home

How to identify good quality care

choosing a care homeMaking the decision to move into residential aged care and choosing the right care home is a stressful process for most families.

Looking beyond the size of rooms and interior decor, it can be difficult for people to identify the signposts of good quality care.

Working in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Australia Consumer Dementia Research Network, Bupa has developed the seven signposts of person-centred care. Arising from that we have developed the choosing a care home booklet and app for iPhone. This will help people when touring aged care homes.

The ‘choosing a care home’ booklet and app will guide people to assess care home services through the lens of person-centred care.

The 7 Signposts of person-centred care support new customers to view aged care environments and the attitudes of staff from the residents’ perspective.

Visitors are asked to consider questions such as:

Do staff

  • value and seek to know each resident well;
  • understand their experience;
  • anticipate their needs and
  • support them to retain personal independence and dignity.

We hope the ‘choosing a care home’ booklet and app will be a useful tool you can offer to new customers.

The booklet is available to download here (pdf, 2.54mb) or you can contact one of our care homes.

The Bupa choosing a care home app is available from the App Store.
